LIGHT MY FIRE!

Let us talk about your flame, shall we? No, not that flame, the love of your life, something more germane to the website: the height of your candle flame. This is important in candle-burning because it can be an indicator of a well-made candle or a candle that has not been made with the proper candle-making education or proper wick testing. The flame is dependent upon the wick size, which is dependent upon the circumference of the candle. The wax also plays a part in this configuration. This is why testing is so important when you are manufacturing candles for public consumption.

The flame height of your candle should be around 1" (one inch), wooden wick or cotton wick. In addition, after two hours the melt pool should extend to all sides of the candle. The first few millimeters atop the candle is the melt pool. If the entire top surface of the candle is not melted after two hours (generally, speaking, depending on the surface area) that means the wick is too small and results in what we call tunneling: a tunnel down the center of the candle with a wax wall on the sides. If your flame is taller that one inch, this means the wick is too big and will usually result in the production of soot: we do not want that!

The next time you light that fire, you'll know if you have a healthy candle or not! Keep leading the fragrant life, friends!
